Palma: Six More Beaches Join Smoking Ban Initiative

Palma de Mallorca is significantly expanding its 'Smoke-Free Spaces' initiative, with six additional beaches now joining the campaign led by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). As of Monday, Es Carnatge, Ciudad Jardín, Es Penyó, Can Pastilla, Cala Major, and Cala Nova will be designated tobacco-free zones, reinforcing the city's commitment to public health and cleaner environments. This move is a crucial step in the AECC’s overarching goal to "achieve the first smoke-free generation" by creating public spaces that actively promote healthy habits. Signs will be installed at these popular bathing areas to clearly identify them as 'Espais sense fum', with local authorities and the AECC working collaboratively to ensure compliance. Ana Belén Velasco, AECC’s manager for the Balearic Islands, emphasized the importance of extending the campaign to beaches, viewing it as vital for further denormalizing tobacco use and new smoking devices in social and leisure settings. She particularly highlighted the need to protect children and teenagers from exposure to smoking behaviors, advocating for natural spaces free from tobacco. This expansion builds upon existing measures already implemented in over 60 parks and public areas across Palma, including well-known spots like Sa Riera Park and Las Estaciones Park.
