Spain Records 1,031 Heat-Related Deaths in June: Implications for Property Owners

Spain is grappling with an unprecedented health crisis this summer, as June 2024 witnessed an alarming surge in heat-related fatalities, setting a new record since monitoring began. Data from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III's Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) reveals 1,031 deaths attributed to high temperatures last month. This figure represents a staggering 153% increase compared to June of the previous year, which recorded 407 deaths. It surpasses previous June records set in 2017 (1,000 deaths) and 2022 (828 deaths). This follows a record-breaking May, which saw 122 heat-linked fatalities. Since the MoMo system's activation on May 13th alongside the Ministry of Health’s Heat Plan, the total estimated deaths have reached 1,153, contrasting with 415 for the same period in 2025. The majority of these tragic incidents occurred towards the end of June, with the 25th recording the highest single-day toll at 120 deaths. Demographically, women accounted for 624 deaths compared to 405 men, with the vast majority (1,022) being over 65, including 720 individuals over 85.

Regionally, Catalonia reported the highest number of fatalities with 218, followed by the Basque Country (147), Castilla y León (96), and Madrid (92). Other affected regions included Galicia (88), Andalusia (72), and the Valencian Community (62). Notably, regions like the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla reported no heat-related deaths.
